Football Themed Cakes

I can’t believe that I haven’t posted this yet! It’s been awhile since these cakes were made. A friend’s son had his first birthday and she asked me to make a football themed cake and a small football smash cake.

The smash cake is chocolate with buttercream. The bottom tier I used an 8 inch square cake pan and added grass to make it look like it was on a field. To make the football I used two 8 inch rounds and then tried to carve it to look like a football.

If you look closely you can see the football has a pebbled texture like a real football. I copied the texture on the brown tier of the big cake. To make the texture I used the back side of a paper towel. You have to let the frosting dry for a bit, maybe 20 to 30 minutes. Carefully place the paper towel on the frosting and very lightly press down. Move the paper towel around the cake until the entire surface is covered.

If it looks like the frosting is sticking to your paper towel just move to a new section of the towel or get a new one. One thing to pay attention to is to not let the frosting dry too long. If you wait too long the frosting will be too dry and will crumble instead of leaving a cute little impression.

The birthday boy approved.
