Pinterest is a wonderful and informative thing isn’t it? I saw this pin a while back and finally got around to try it out. It said you can “regrow” romaine lettuce. After you cut off what you need for your salad save the root and put it in some water and watch it grow. What do you know…it works! The top picture is yesterday afternoon, the bottom one today. Look how much they have grown in one day. The one on the right has been in my window for about 4 or 5 days I think. The one on the left just yesterday morning.
I change out the water every couple of days and rinse the root off to keep it from getting slimy. Other than that I just leave it alone. We’ll see how much lettuce I’ll be able to harvest.
I tried this as well and my lettuce grew, then strangely it started to turn brown and I had to throw it out. I keep saying I’m going to try it again. I’m not sure what I did wrong, but I’m not giving up yet!!!

Mine stopped growing and turned brown after awhile as well. I had another post later on about it. I wonder if it needs plant food or maybe just throw it in some dirt? I had huge long roots growing and I don’t think it was getting any nutrients. I haven’t gotten around to trying it again either.

I’ve done this with green onion – I bought a bunch 4 months ago and the stubs are still going in my garden, but I didn’t know this worked with romaine too. Thanks!

You’re welcome! Hopefully it will work better for you than it has for me. My lettuce isn’t looking so good after three weeks.
